Governor KT Parnaik has underscored the importance of combining traditional knowledge with scientific research to enhance biodiversity conservation in Arunachal Pradesh. During a meeting held on Thursday with Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board Chairman Hawa Bagang at the Lok Bhavan in Itanagar, the governor highlighted that indigenous communities in the region hold generations of wisdom regarding forests, medicinal plants, wildlife, sacred groves, and sustainable resource use.
During the discussions, Parnaik advised the board to systematically document, preserve, and promote this heritage by collaborating with local knowledge holders. He emphasized that this indigenous wisdom should complement modern scientific methods to protect the state's diverse flora and fauna. Furthermore, the governor drew attention to various environmental challenges, including habitat loss, climate change, unsustainable resource exploitation, and the gradual loss of traditional knowledge, calling for active community participation, stronger biodiversity management committees, and effective people's biodiversity registers to combat them.
Parnaik urged authorities to transform biodiversity conservation into a widespread people's movement by encouraging citizens, especially the youth and students, to learn from village elders, revive sustainable practices, and value the state's ecological wealth. He stated that development and conservation must advance together to ensure the natural heritage remains protected for future generations. In response, APBB Chairman Hawa Bagang expressed commitment to concrete conservation initiatives and briefed the governor on key ongoing efforts to protect biological resources and promote their sustainable use.
