Delhi Influencer Arrested for Racially Abusing Tripura Youth

Delhi Police arrested a self-proclaimed social media influencer named Amir Shokeen, whose real name is Muhammad Amir, for allegedly racially abusing a man from Tripura. The arrest followed the emergence of a viral video showing the harassment, which sparked widespread criticism online. In the footage, Shokeen used a derogatory racial slur, asked the victim if he was the president of China, and mocked the name of the northeastern state. Police took suo motu cognizance of the incident and deployed multiple teams to trace the suspect.

Authorities apprehended Shokeen in Karol Bagh after conducting several raids. Deputy commissioner of police (north) Niharika Bhatt stated that the accused is classified as a bad character from the Sadar Bazar police station area and has a criminal history with multiple cases registered against him at the Bara Hindu Rao and Sadar Bazar police stations between 2005 and 2023. His previous offenses include allegations of molestation. A man claiming to be his brother told reporters they lived separately due to Shokeen's hooligan-like behavior.

Following the public backlash, Shokeen released videos claiming the interaction was a joke and asking for forgiveness from the people and chief minister of Tripura. Police formally booked him under sections 192, 196, 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for inciting provocation, promoting enmity, intentional insult, and public mischief. Meanwhile, the Tripura Students Forum-Delhi lodged a complaint with the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region. In Itanagar, Indian Youth Congress general secretary Tarh Johny strongly condemned the abuse, demanded a thorough investigation, and called for strict legal action while welcoming the registration of the First Information Report.
