Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that a new Rs 208-crore super-speciality hospital will be built at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. The announcement was shared by the Chief Minister in a post on the social media platform X.
The project aims to bring advanced medical facilities closer to patients in northern Assam, reducing the need for families to travel long distances to places like Guwahati for specialised treatment. The proposed facility will feature seven specialised departments to strengthen the existing medical infrastructure at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital and improve healthcare access for patients from Sonitpur and neighbouring districts.
By expanding the range of medical services available locally, the initiative is expected to ease the financial and logistical burden on patients and their families, allowing them to focus on recovery without the strain of traveling far. Specific details regarding the construction timeline, proposed bed capacity, expected commissioning date, and the identities of the seven departments were not immediately disclosed.
This development aligns with Assam's ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure by expanding medical colleges, hospitals, and specialised treatment facilities. Over the years, the state has worked to expand its network of medical colleges to improve healthcare services and medical education beyond major urban centres like Guwahati, aiming to improve overall healthcare access across the state.
